Introduction

This is an individual assignment aimed to give the student exposure to the concepts, principles tools and techniques underpinning M Commerce and their application. This also provides an opportunity for the students to recommend a mobile solution to a business and functional requirements provided.

Outcomes of the assignment

· Apply understanding of the underlying principles, tools and techniques to discuss and evaluate the impact of M-commerce and the applications that support it.

· Strategically align business models and objectives with M-commerce solutions.

· Analyze business and functional requirements, investigate and recommend mobile solutions.                                                                                                                                                          

Assignment tasks

Task 1

You are required to produce a work proposal briefing the expected deliverables, approach towards the solution, potential risks and timeline.

Expected Deliverables of the assignment [The deliverables are the specific work products that student must produce in order to complete the assignment. Example: For a business analysis assignment, deliverables could be business analysis plan, feasibility report, business requirement specification etc.] Approach towards the solution [Specify the Literature, Software and Hardware needed to meet the assignment objectives] Potential risks foreseeable [Technical risk, Management risk, External risk etc.] Timeline and work breakdown (Gantt chart): References.

Task 2

XYZ's is known for its handkerchiefs clothing, but it also sells T-shirts, Sweat Shirts and trousers. Unlike the handkerchiefs business in which the company sells product directly to large retailers such as Carrefour, the active wear division, which manufactures blank T-shirts, uses several dozen distributors. These sells their shirts to about 30,000 screen printers embroiders who decorate the shirts and sells them to public and for retailers who then market them to customers. The market is very competitive and complex. The distributors sell other product as well, and also T-shirts made by XYZ's competitors. Therefore the relationship between active wear and its distributors are critical. To boost these relationships, XYZ decided to develop and maintain a mobile app for customer. App includes color electronic catalogue, inventory level information, buyer’s credit availability and ordering from both the shirts printers and retailers enter the distributor’s to facilitate their own back office operation of inventory and billing. The distributors are allowed to advertise and sell other vendor product in the app. These ways XYZ commits itself to a supporting system that benefits all the channel members in a link that start with its app.

XYZ hopes to gain favor with distributors, many of whom do not have time or money to build their website. The system also includes models that automatically that suggest XYZ's substitute product for products not in stock. XYZ believes that the investment pays for itself XYZ’s uses its experience to generate profit by setting up app for other companies.

a)  Should Mobile application Development be tackled In-House or Outsourced?
b)  What kind of commerce category it lies in?
c) Is the M-commerce System bringing XYZ closer to its customer? Why and why not?

d) Why does XYZ allow their distributors to use their mobile app for selling competitors’ products?

Justify your answer with appropriate example related to case study.

Task 3

The phenomenal growth in the use of smartphones, GPS and Internet is giving rise to a revolution in the business world. This revolution is focused on conducting business on the move usually by mobile commerce applications this trend is fueled by the consumer interest in being able to access business services anytime and anywhere. It is also motivated by the interest of the business community to extend their reach to customers at all times and at all places, provided an opportunity to extend traditional E-Commerce applications to perform on Mobile banking. Critically evaluate how this transition strategically align the business models with the support of necessary cases of your choice of domain. Your evaluation should be furnished as a write up of 700 words of your own apart from the reference/d contents.


Task 4

Prepare a report on the industry expert talk comprising an executive summary of your understanding and critical reflections. The word count should be between 700 and 800.

Task 5

Produce a proposal for the development of a realistic Mobile Commerce application for the business scenario provided. Your proposal should accommodate the stages given below with appropriate deliverables.

Note. You are not expected to actually implement the system.

Stage 1 Architecture and business flow

Outline the proposed mobile commerce application’s business flow and architecture. Identify the benefits to the various categories of user, arising from the addition of a mobile-access facility. You are required to list the implications of proposed applications as well.

Stage 2 Technical Requirements

Identify the business to technical requirements of the proposed mobile solution based on the number of users, volume of data, applications, services with respect to bandwidth, security and performance etc... Discuss any conflicts that arise between the various technical requirements.

Stage 3 Design

Produce a simple screen prototype/story board for the proposed sales order suite. Your design stage should produce a topological design, showing how the wireless part of the network would be integrated into the wired backbone network.

Stage 4 Devices

Identify the devices to construct the network as well as the portable/handheld devices to implement the system with proper justification. What are the technical capabilities and limitations of users’ devices, and how do these issues affect the design requirements?

Stage 5 Critical Evaluation

A reflection of your learning experience. You must be specific and not just say ‘I learned a lot about this or that …’ but say exactly what you did learn. Include other points such as identification of business objectives, alignment of IT Strategy against Business objectives, time management issues and technical issues.


Your proposal should be furnished as a write up with 1000 words of your own apart from the reference/d contents and screens.


Business Scenario


Al Zehra Pharmacy in Muscat, Oman may be the ultimate proving ground for pharmacy drive-through technologies. The store averages 200 to 500 prescriptions a day. Co-owner Ahmad Khalil Al Khamis, sought to find the “killer app” for multiple drive-through lanes. He found his solution to be Jamila App for POS, the only pharmacy-proven mobile point-of sale solution. There they are having 2 lanes of drive-through service, with six windows, and they can be backed up six cars deep. Customer service and speed are the keys to their success. Locals expect their prescriptions on the fast-food service model, so they do everything to fulfill their demands and needs.

Al Zehra Pharmacy Managing Director has just returned from a trade fair with some disturbing news. Couple of their competitors are actively exploring the use of mobile technologies within their sales process! The Managing Director has requested the Business IT Manager, Mr. Muhammad Sohail Hayat, to propose and prototype a new M-Commerce application for the sales process of Al Zehra Pharmacy (Jamila App).
